Yosemite Sam was introduced by animator Friz Freleng in the 1945 cartoon Hare Trigger. The character is widely considered a caricature of Freleng himself, featuring his grumpy demeanor, fiery temper, strident voice, and short stature; this resemblance is confirmed by production crew members and Freleng's own daughter. Freleng noted in an Associated Press interview, "I have the same temperament, I'm small, and I used to have a red mustache." Other influences include Sheriff Deadeye from Red Skelton, Dangerous Dan McFoo from Tex Avery cartoons, Jimmy Finlayson, Frank Nelson, and the Terrible-Tempered Mr. Bang from Toonerville Trolley. Michael Maltese originally considered names like Texas Tiny or Denver Dan before settling on Yosemite Sam. While often a cowboy, Freleng dressed him in diverse costumes for almost every film, including a knight, Roman legionary, pirate, Hessian mercenary, and even a space alien, with the humor stemming from the miscasting of this hot-tempered cowboy.

In Their Own Story

In his debut short Hare Trigger (1945), Sam's small stature was highlighted when a train passed over him while he attempted to rob it, forcing him to use portable stairs to mount his horse. He has frequently battled Bugs Bunny across various roles. As "Sea-Goin' Sam" in Buccaneer Bunny and Captain Hareblower, he commanded pirate ships, only to be outsmarted by Bugs; in the latter, he escaped an explosion caused by Bugs but unknowingly triggered a trap involving makeup powder. In Southern Fried Rabbit, he served as a Confederate soldier long after the Civil War ended, refusing to leave his post despite Bugs telling him the war was over 90 years prior. In Big House Bunny (where he is named Sam Schultz), he imprisoned Bugs for 99 years but was eventually jailed himself by the Warden for his own antics. In Sahara Hare, as "Riff Raff Sam," he owned the desert and chased Bugs into a castle, only to fall victim to an armed bomb-coated door.

Yosemite Sam is defined by his extreme aggression, loud voice, and short stature, often wearing a black Domino mask regardless of his costume to signify his outlaw status.
